A theater show where Lightning McQueen takes you to his racing academy and walks you through what makes him fast. Wraparound screen, animated McQueen, brief motion segment. Aimed squarely at preschoolers.
Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy opened at Hollywood Studios in 2019, taking over a former Sunset Showcase venue. The premise: McQueen has retired from racing and opened a training academy for new racers, and you're his first audience. The 10-minute show uses an animated McQueen on a motion-base car in front of a 200-foot wraparound screen.
No height requirement โ any guest can ride. Children under 7 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older.
After a queue themed as McQueen's training facility, you enter a theater. The lights dim, and McQueen appears on the central motion-base car (an animated figure that moves and 'speaks' via face projection). He introduces his training philosophy and you follow him through a virtual racing track on the screen โ ducking under tunnels, banking through curves, narrowly avoiding collisions.
The whole experience is theatrical rather than physical โ you don't move, McQueen does. The 10 minutes are paced for kids, with predictable plot beats and a triumphant finale.
Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy doesn't have Lightning Lane. The theater capacity (~250 seats per show) means waits are usually under 15 minutes for the next show.
Average standby wait by season (observed over 2024-2025 data):
| Season | Morning | Midday | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | 5 min | 15 min | 10 min |
| Moderate | 10 min | 20 min | 15 min |
| High season | 15 min | 25 min | 20 min |
| Holiday peaks | 20 min | 30 min | 25 min |
Anytime. Show times are continuous; the wait is for the next show.
The whole show is for kids who love Lightning McQueen. If you have a 5-year-old in McQueen merch, this is essential.
10 minutes of seated air-conditioning between Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.
Fully aimed at children. Without a kid in your group, the show feels long for what it is.
It's a theater show, not a ride. The motion-base McQueen moves; you don't.
Sit in the middle of the theater. Best view of the wraparound screen. Side seats lose some of the side-screen content.
Skip if no Cars fans in your group. The show is genuinely for fans of the franchise. Without a 5-year-old in your party, you're sitting through 10 minutes for adults' sake.
Stay for the meet-and-greet. After the show, you can meet McQueen and Cruz Ramirez in the adjacent meet-and-greet area. Brief but high-quality character interaction.
Use it as a pre-Tower-of-Terror warmup. If you're nervous about Tower of Terror (the very next attraction), the McQueen show is a calm 10 minutes that resets your energy.
