A jeep-style time-machine dark ride through a Cretaceous-era forest. Sudden drops, animatronic dinosaurs lunging at the vehicle, and a final Carnotaurus encounter that genuinely scares many adults. Surprisingly intense for a 1990s Disney attraction.
DINOSAUR opened at Animal Kingdom in 1998 as 'Countdown to Extinction,' renamed in 2000 to align with the Disney film of the same year. The ride is a dark ride with motion-base jeep-style vehicles that move through a Cretaceous-era forest. The premise: scientists send you back in time to capture an Iguanodon before the asteroid impact ends the dinosaur era.
You must be at least 40โณ (102cm) to ride DINOSAUR.
Rider Switch (child swap) is available for parties with kids under the height requirement. If your child is close to the line, the cast member at the queue entrance will measure them against the post.
After a queue themed as the Dino Institute, you board a 12-person jeep vehicle. The vehicle launches into the dark โ and immediately, dinosaurs begin appearing from the shadows. The ride combines the motion of the vehicle (which jolts and bounces aggressively) with sudden lunges from animatronic dinosaurs along the track.
The ride builds toward an encounter with a Carnotaurus, an audio-animatronic that lunges at the vehicle in a sequence designed to startle. The final approach to the asteroid impact and the return to present day end the 3.5-minute experience.
Most adults find it more intense than they expected. Many kids โ even tall enough to ride โ are genuinely frightened.
DINOSAUR is a comfortable Lightning Lane Multi Pass pick when standby exceeds 30 minutes. Most days, standby runs 25-45 minutes โ meaningful but not crushing.
If you're prioritizing Animal Kingdom LL: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey come first; DINOSAUR is a strong third pick.

First 60 minutes after rope drop or in the last 90 minutes of operations.
The right age and tolerance level. Most kids 8+ love the scares.
Surprisingly intense for an older Disney ride. Real jump-scares.
The Carnotaurus finale legitimately scares most kids under 8. Calibrate before you board.
The motion is jolting and aggressive. Disney lists multiple physical conditions that should not ride.
Brief your kids. Don't let kids walk into this thinking it's a gentle dinosaur ride. The scares are real. Talk through what to expect.
Sit in the back. The motion is more pronounced at the back. If you want maximum impact, back row. If you want gentler, front row.
Consider the time of day. Afternoon rides feel more intense because of fatigue. Morning rides are easier to handle.
Don't ride after a heavy meal. The vehicle is bouncy enough that a full stomach is uncomfortable.
