An interactive shooter dark ride where you blast Zurg's robots with laser cannons. The score-keeping turns a gentle family ride into a competitive event for kids โ and adults who refuse to lose to them.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin opened in 1998 as a successor to If You Had Wings, taking advantage of the original ride's Omnimover system. The premise: Buzz needs help defeating Emperor Zurg, and you're the new recruit. Each two-person cruiser has a joystick (to spin the vehicle) and two laser blasters (one per rider). Hit the targets, rack up points, defeat Zurg.
No height requirement โ any guest can ride. Children under 7 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older.
After a brief pre-show with Buzz, you board a two-person XP-37 cruiser. The vehicle moves through a series of black-light dark scenes filled with Zurg's robot army โ each marked with a glowing target. Pull the trigger to fire your laser; hit the target and your score ticks up. The joystick spins your cruiser 360ยฐ, which matters because the highest-value targets are at angles standard riders can't easily aim at.
Kids love it. Adults love it. There's a leaderboard at the unload area showing the top scores of the day, which has fueled at least one family argument per month for two decades.
Buzz Lightyear is a comfortable Lightning Lane Multi Pass pick when standby exceeds 30 minutes. It's not a top-tier priority โ Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan, and Tiana's Bayou Adventure all have longer waits and bigger LL value.
If you have multiple LL slots: Buzz makes a strong Pick 4 or Pick 5. Standby on busy days runs 35-55 minutes; LL takes that to under 10.
Average standby wait by season (observed over 2024-2025 data):
| Season | Morning | Midday | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | 15 min | 30 min | 20 min |
| Moderate | 25 min | 45 min | 30 min |
| High season | 35 min | 60 min | 45 min |
| Holiday peaks | 45 min | 80 min | 55 min |
Anytime is fine โ the wait stays moderate throughout the day. The early afternoon (when families are eating lunch) is often the shortest. Avoid the immediate post-parade window; families head straight here after watching from Main Street.
Interactive scoring keeps kids engaged, and the dark scenes aren't scary.
The score-keeping creates instant rivalry. Re-riding to beat each other's score is half the fun.
Air-conditioned, sit-down, low-stimulation. A solid mid-day reset.
It's a slow dark ride aimed at kids. The thrill is the scoring, not the motion.
Aim for diamond and triangle targets. Diamond targets are worth 5,000 points. Triangle targets at angles are worth 100,000+. Easy circle targets are 100. Skip the easy ones if you can.
Spin your cruiser. The joystick rotates the vehicle 360ยฐ. Most first-timers don't realize this and miss whole sections of targets behind them.
Hit Zurg's belt. In the final battle scene, Zurg has a target on his belt buckle worth massive points. Aim there, not at his ship.
Wear your laser like a pro. Detach the laser from its holster โ the cord is long enough. You can aim more precisely without the vehicle's bracket in the way.
