Consistently rated the #1 ride at Walt Disney World in guest surveys. A flight simulator on the back of a banshee, soaring over Pandora. Motion-sick riders beware โ everyone else: prepare for awe.
Avatar Flight of Passage opened in 2017 as the centerpiece of Pandora โ The World of Avatar. The ride uses a simulator seat that mimics a banshee (flying creature from the film) and a massive wraparound projection. You lean forward, the ride tilts and moves, and the screen creates the illusion of soaring through Pandora's floating mountains. It's consistently ranked as the best-loved attraction at any Disney park worldwide in guest surveys. Even people who've never seen the Avatar movies generally report being blown away.
You must be at least 44โณ (112cm) to ride Avatar Flight of Passage.
Rider Switch (child swap) is available for parties with kids under the height requirement. If your child is close to the line, the cast member at the queue entrance will measure them against the post.
The pre-show is genuinely good โ you're introduced to the Pandora conservation society, scan your avatar DNA, and walk into a bioluminescent lab. Then you mount your banshee saddle (lean forward, bars lock over your calves and shoulders) and the ride begins.
The next 5 minutes are a sensory assault: wind, water mist, the saddle "breathing" (via airbags underneath), screen visuals at eye-scrambling resolution. The motion simulates flight through forest canopy, open skies, and hovering above waterfalls.
Flight of Passage uses Individual Lightning Lane. Pricing is $10-$15 per person โ one of the cheaper Individual LL options because Animal Kingdom historically has shorter park hours.
If you don't want to pay Individual LL, rope-drop is essential. The ride's capacity is moderate but demand is high โ standby waits of 120+ minutes are routine by mid-morning.
Average standby wait by season (observed over 2024-2025 data):
| Season | Morning | Midday | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low season | 60 min | 100 min | 70 min |
| Moderate | 85 min | 140 min | 90 min |
| High season | 120 min | 180+ min | 110 min |
| Holiday peaks | 150+ min | 240+ min | 130 min |
Rope drop or end-of-day. Animal Kingdom usually closes earlier than other parks (8pm in low season, 9-10pm in high). The last hour of operation typically drops the wait by 30-40%.
Midday is the worst window. Avoid the 11am-3pm wait like the plague.
If you loved Soarin' or Star Tours, Flight of Passage is the next step up. The immersion is unmatched.
Pandora โ the land itself โ is one of Disney's best environments. The ride building is just the capstone.
The ride is one of the most intense simulators Disney has made. If you struggle with motion sickness, take Dramamine 30 minutes before.
The saddle requires straddling a narrow motorcycle-style seat. Plus-sized guests sometimes struggle to fit the leg restraints. There's a test seat outside the queue โ use it if uncertain.
Use the test seat. There's a test saddle in the queue entry area. If you can't get the leg restraints to click, you can't ride. Don't wait 2 hours to find out.
Keep your head pressed against the headrest. The banshee's "breathing" effect is on the back of your head. If you lean forward too much, you miss it.
Look down. The screen wraps below you. Most riders stare straight ahead and miss the ground-level visuals during low flight.
Ride it first in your day. If something goes wrong with the ride (rare but possible), you'll have time to try again.
